A FIRST Lego League Team
FIRST Lego® League is a competition between teams of kids.
There are three main parts to the competition:
1. Robot building and programming
Our team starts with a Lego® robot called Mindstorms NXT. We then use Lego® pieces to build a whole robot that can move around a competition table and complete tasks given to us by the judges. We program the robot to complete the tasks autonomously within a certain amount of time.
We have to be able to describe our robot and program design to the judges. They ask us questions about why we did things certain ways and how we tested our design and programming.
What is hard about it:
Some of the hardest parts of the robot building and programming are:
Making a robot whose movements you can control accurately and consistently
Making attachments to the robot that will manipulate the pieces to complete the missions, and programming the robot to finish all the missions within the set time.
What we learned:
In order to do this part of the project well, our team had to learn about computer programming, robotics, and engineering.
We had to learn how to use a computer program to get the robot to do what we want it to
We had to learn about gears and motors, and we had to learn how to build a working robot without instructions.
2. Research project
The theme for the research project this year was Power Puzzle - Energy Resources - Meeting the Global Demand Our team had to conduct research to "Explore how energy production and consumption choices affect the planet and our quality of life today, tomorrow, and for future generations." Find a way to apply this research then create a presentation for the judges. Our team did a lot of research online, in books, in magazines, and by talking to a lot of experts.
Our project:
content to come
Our presentation to the judges:
Included a Gnome Gnews which the team handed out to other participants and the public at the competitions.
In order to do this part of the competition well, our team had to learn about, and research the following subjects: content to come
3. Teamwork
The third part of this competition is teamwork. The team was scored on how well we worked together, cheered for our team, helped other teams, etc.
